Metal Sculptures

NEW! The Athey Sea Serpent

Metal sculptures welded in steel, bronze, iron, lead and copper create a scenic gallery of birds of prey, garden birds and insects.

David Athey's sculptures are individually constructed with a hands-on method that produces a one-of-a-kind design for each sculpture and emphasizes the inherent colours and textures of the metals.  All sculptures are life-size unless stated otherwise.

Sculptures may be purchased through selected galleries, bought directly from David, or commissioned from the artist.

David creates bird sculptures in metal,  primarily mild steel but incorporating non-ferrous metals if required. The sculptures are heat-treated to give patina and colour variation, prior to coating with clear lacquer. The bird sculptures are life-size. Depending on the type of bird, the mounts are either timber or stone with beize base. Each sculpture is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity containing a  photograph of the piece, dated and signed by the artist.
David spent twenty years as a self-employed artist-blacksmith during which time he developed the unique technique used in his bird sculptures which now occupy the majority of his time.

For twenty years, David was a practising Blacksmith working from his Smithy at Garton-on-the-Wolds near Driffield.  During that time he completed many public and private commissions, including the Millennium Mast at Flamborough, Gates and Arch for All Saints Church at Lund, Banister Rails for St Mary's Church in Beverley.

When he had art-work accepted for exhibition at The Fire and Iron Gallery at Leatherhead, Surrey, he was encouraged to concentrate on his sculptures - primarily Birds of Prey - resulting in exhibits at The Blake Gallery in York, The Osprey Watch Centre , near Keswick, Montage in Castleton near Whitby and Yarm, Scampston Hall Garden Restaurant Gallery near Malton.

He also exhibits at Garton Heritage Forge in Garton, near Driffield

David works mainly in steel, enabling him to use his forging skills but is happy to utilise other metals such as brass, copper and lead.
